Technology Definition & Meaning
Man’s technological ascent began in earnest in what is known as the Neolithic period (“New stone age”). The invention of polished stone axes was a major advance because it allowed forest clearance on a large scale to create farms. Additionally, children could contribute labor to the raising of crops more readily than they could to the hunter-gatherer lifestyle. To make a stone tool, a “core” of hard stone with specific flaking properties was struck with a hammerstone.
- ’99 helped design and build the original backbone of the internet.
- Boats, which were invented and used before the wheel, utilized all sorts of technologies, from navigational tools to pulley systems and wind power.
- On today’s show, the story of how one economic hero helped to transform Taiwan’s economy and create the “Taiwan Miracle.”
- Satellite technology offers the opportunity, as never before, for continuous television coverage of major international events.
So, basically, whenever we use our scientific knowledge to achieve some specific purpose, we’re using technology. Technology usually involves a specific piece of equipment, but that equipment can be incredibly simple or dazzlingly complex. It can be anything from the discovery of the wheel, all the way up to computers and MP3 players. The word “technology” can also be used to refer to a collection of techniques. In this context, it is the current state of humanity’s knowledge of how to combine resources to produce desired products, to solve problems, fulfill needs, or satisfy wants; it includes technical methods, skills, processes, techniques, tools and raw materials.
Put together, the Roman aqueducts extended over 450 km, but less than 70 km of this was above ground and supported by arches. The performance-based exams certify foundational IT skills across a variety of devices and operating systems. Our modern student accommodation is just minutes away from the AUT City or North Campus. Henry L. Gantt, Class of 1884, developed the Gantt chart, a bar chart for tracking construction project schedules that’s an industry mainstay still in wide use today. ’41 won the 1995 Nobel Prize for Physics for the first detection of the neutrino, a subatomic particle whose detection is a keystone to understanding elementary particle physics.
This flaking produced a sharp edge on the core stone as well as on the flakes, either of which could be used as tools, primarily in the form of choppers or scrapers. The use of tools by early humans was partly a process of discovery, partly of evolution. Early humans evolved from a race of foraging hominids which were already bipedal, with a brain mass approximately one third that of modern humans.
Making innovation happen
Each student should be able to design, implement, and evaluate a computing-based solution to meet a given set of computing requirements in the context of the program’s discipline. Each student should be able to analyze a complex computing problem and to apply principles of computing and other relevant disciplines to identify solutions. Able to communicate Visual Communication Design prototype alternative solutions independently or groups in verbal form, graphical, written, and communicative models with analog or digital techniques by selected appropriate communication rules. Able to analyze level of material utilization efficiency and time in the production process of each selected alternative solution prototype of Visual Communication Design, without changing the essence and aesthetic design.
Many technological processes produce unwanted by-products, known as pollution, and deplete natural resources, to the detriment of the Earth and its environment. Various implementations of technology influence the values of a society and new technology often raises new ethical questions. Examples include the rise of the notion of efficiency in terms of human productivity, a term originally applied only to machines, and the challenge of traditional norms. Technology is the application of scientific knowledge to the practical aims of human life or, as it is sometimes phrased, to the change and manipulation of the human environment. Recent years have brought about a rise in social media’s cultural prominence, with potential repercussions on democracy, and economic and social life. Early on, the internet was seen as a “liberation technology” that would democratize knowledge, improve access to education, and promote democracy.
